CBD Oil, Hemp Oil, Hemp Seed Oil, Marijuana, Weed, Pot. ALL of these are natural plant substances and/or products, and ALL of them come from the Cannabis plant.
Confused ? We thought so. Our main focus here is to clear the air concerning common misconceptions, interpretations and understandings of our industry’s product names, labeling and terminology.
How Do I know What’s What, CBD, Hemp, Cannabis ?

CBD From Cannabis Sativa Hemp
Cannabis has been used as a medicine, religious and spiritual ceremonies, food, recreation, seed oil and a source for industrial fibers for thousands of years. Each part of the plant can be harvested differently depending on the purpose of it’s use. Those specific product purposes have different names and this is where much of the confusion is, with CBD Hemp Oil/Hemp Seed Oil/Marijuana/Weed/Pot. In addition, the cannabis plant has different strains that suit each of the above end use/purpose. The main two types being those with a high CBD (Cannabidiol) content and plants with a high THC(Tetrahydrocannabinol) content. Two different dominant traits, same Genus: Cannabis. Cannabis also goes by the name, Hemp and Cannabis. The trait of the plant determines what word should be used to call out it’s dominance.
Examples:
- If we are referring to a cannabis plant with THC dominance, that will get you high, using the word marijuana is accurate – read more about this topic and other names below
- If we are referring to a cannabis plant with CBD dominance with .3%THC or less, hemp is primarily used
What Is CBD Oil and Hemp Oil?
Is Hemp oil and CBD oil the same product? Yes. CBD Oil, like that found here at New Life Hemp Oil, is from cannabis sativa hemp plants grown to be high in CBD and very low in THC, and are for medicinal, health purposes only. Hemp Oil contains CBD, therefore products are called and described as either or both. You can not have one without the other. It is worth noting that Hemp SEED Oil is not CBD oil or Hemp Oil.
The oil comes in different types and forms, like full spectrum, whole plant CBD-dominant hemp extract oil, capsules, edibles and suppositories. Another type is CBD Isolate (powder form) which is 95-100% pure CBD or CBD Oil made from isolate. These do not contain any THC, nor are they a full-spectrum CBD product.
Key Points:
- Always check the product label for these terms: CBD/CBDa, Cannabinoids or Phytocannabinoids, Hemp Extract. Any one of these or any combination of these, tells you it is a CBD product

Marijuana, Weed, Pot
A plant that is grown to be THC (Tetrahydrocannabinol) dominant, is typically referred to as marijuana/marihuana(Spanish) or cannabis, weed or pot. The correct name for the plant is Cannabis. Weed, pot, reefer, maryjane, and the list goes on – are all slang terms. Using these terms however does help in calling out what plant classification one is talking about, as far as the specific plant’s dominant cannabinoid, CBD or THC. In other words, if we are talking about cannabis in general, this covers BOTH CBD dominant and THC dominant plants. If we use the term marijuana in a discussion about a cannabis plant, we are saying it is THC dominant.
What Is Hempseed Oil? The Biggest Confusion
Hemp seed oil is made from the cannabis/hemp seeds only. Hempseed oil is used in lubricants, paints, wood finishes, inks, and plastics. Hempseed oil is also commonly used in the production of soaps, shampoos, and detergents. The only health benefit is that it contains a 3:1 ratio of Omega6 to Omega3 fatty acids. PLEASE NOTE: Hempseed oil is not CBD oil, it is not Hemp Oil. We do not offer Hemp seed oil at New Life Hemp Oil.
